We often refer to Building Information Modeling (BIM) in our blog posts. We believe that BIM technology can have great benefits for the construction industry both in the long and short term. A vast number of construction companies are already using this technology. But what are the biggest construction firms that are using it?

After some thorough research we are able to present a list with the 50 biggest construction companies that are using BIM technology. You can download the whole list below simply by adding your email address to the form that you will find below.

1: Hochtief Aktiengesellschaft

Hochtief is one of world’s biggest construction companies, based on its revenue. The exact starting date of the company is unknown, but people assume it was founded in 1874 as that was the first time the company appeared in the local address book.

The German company is known for some big projects. One remarkable building is the MesseTurm in Frankfurt. For 6 years this building has been the tallest building in Europe.

Besides being the contractor of some of the biggest construction projects in the world, Hochtief also has many experience in the field of BIM technology. The company even has a subcompany (Hochtief ViCon) where they develop and apply their own BIM 3D models.

2: China Communications Construction Group

The China Communications Construction Group is also known as the CCCC. The company was established in 2005 after the merger of two big Chinese companies. Nowadays CCCC is (one of) the largest construction companies in China.

One of the biggest projects the company has done is the construction of world’s longest sea bridge, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge (36 kilometers long!).

Like most other Chinese construction companies, CCCC is trying to implement technologies like BIM in construction. They even once won a price for having the best BIM design during a bidding competition.

3: VINCI

The Vinci Group has his name since 2000. Before that time the Group had other names. The company was founded as SGE in 1899 by two engineers from the elite French engineering school Polytechnique.

The group has had a lot of different projects across the world. One thing they’re increasingly implementing throughout the different stages of their projects is BIM technology. An example of where they’ve used this type of technology is the renovation and extension of the Tottenham Court Road underground station in London.[

4: Bechtel Corporation

Being one of the world’s biggest construction companies, Bechtel has since 1898 finished more than 25 000 projects across 160 countries on all seven continents.

Bechtel Corporation implements BIM technology on a lot of their projects. One example was the Gatwick Airport, where they had the challenge to modernize the airport without disrupting the ongoing operations. By using BIM technology, they were able to deliver the projects more time and cost efficiently.

5: Bouygues

The Bouygues Group has around 120,000 employees in 90 countries. The Bouygues Group has a department in real estate development, media and telecommunications. But it’s probably most famous for its department in construction. That’s the department the company started with back in 1952.

6: TechnipFMC

Technip was established in 1958. It has about 40,000 employees in 48 different countries. In 2017 FMC Technologies and Technip combined forces to become TechnipFMC, a global leader in subsea, onshore/offshore and surface projects.

7: Skanska AB

Skanska is one of world’s leading project management and construction groups. The company was founded back in 1887. Nowadays, the company has more than 41,000 employees all over the world.

An example of one the big projects Skanska did is the 16 kilometers long Öresund Bridge which transports approximately 20,000 people every day.

8: STRABAG

STRABAG is a big construction company with its headquarters based in Austria. The company was founded all the way back in 1835. After a lot of mergers and acquisitions, the strong brand STRABAG was established in 2006.

One of STRABAG’s major projects is the construction of the metro line in Copenhagen, which was openend between 2002 and 2007.

9: China State Construction Engineering Corporation

The China State Construction engineering Corporation, or in short China Construction, was formally established on December 10, 2007. Based on revenue, this company belongs to the biggest construction companies in the world.

Probably the most famous project of China Construction was the construction of the Great Mosque of Algiers. The costs of this project were approximately 1.5 billion dollars. Check out this BBC article about the project.

10: Ferrovial Agroman

Since its foundation in 1952, the Spanish construction company Ferrovial Agroman has become one of the leading infrastructure and services operators, committed to developing innovative and sustainable solutions. The company has more than 96,000 employees in over 15 different countries.

The company has implemented BIM technology in multiple projects. Nowadays, Ferrovial Agroman are working in a big number of new projects. Furthermore, they have the BIM certification of the BSI, Level 2, in two of the countries that they are working: UK and Australia.

11: Salini Impregilo

Salini Impregilo is an industrial group specialising in the construction of major, complex projects. The company is operating in over 50 countries with over 35,000 employees.The Italian based company started in 1906 when two guys started with construction projects locally. Eventually this business grow to the size it nowadays is.

Salini Impregilo has an impressive portfolio of completed construction projects. They’re also increasingly implementing BIM technology in their projects. According the official corporate website they use BIM to support the planning, designing construction and management phases.

12: Consolidated Construction Group

The Consolidated Construction Group is named as the largest construction company in the Middle East. The company started its business in 1952 in Beirut, Lebanon. Nowadays the company has its headquarters in Athens, Greece. CCC has offices in over 40 countries, and a workforce of more than 130,000 employees.

CCC has a lot of experience with BIM technology. The company already started working with BIM in 1997. Nowadays they even have a special department where they train talented engineers who are then able to develop efficiently quality BIM. See more about CCC and BIM.

13: Samsung C&T

Samsung C&T was founded in 1938 as a parent company of the Samsung Group. Since 1995, the company is mainly focussed on global engineering and construction projects.

The group has constructed two of world’s tallest and most famous skyscrapers, the Petronas Towers in Malaysia and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Samsung C&T was also the general contractor of the DDP project. To overcome some serious issues, they decided to deploy BIM technology in all the stages of the building process. Because of the complex structure of the building there were still some challenges, but the BIM technology made it possible for them to finish the project on time and within budget.

14: Royal BAM Group

The Royal BAM Group was founded in 1869 as a joiner’s shop. It was in in 1927 when it officially got his name. BAM has approximately 19,500 employees and has home markets in several wel known European countries.

One of BAM’s biggest projects was the construction of the Amsterdam ArenA in 1996.

BAM has a lot of experience with BIM technology. It has adopted a ‘whole life BIM’ approach, which means that they use BIM in every stage of the project (design, construction and operations). The Royal BAM Group is one of the market leaders when it comes to the implementation of BIM technology.

15: JGC Corporation

The JGC Corporation was founded on 25 October 1928. The company participates in the design and construction of large energy projects. Over the course of the company’s history it implemented over 20,000 projects in 50 countries.

One of the biggest projects of the company was the construction of the Gas Processing Plant for Abu Dhabi Gas Industries.

The JGC Corporation is using 3D engineering tools including BIM in their projects for better project planning.

16: Chiyoda Corporation

Chiyoda Corporation was established in 1948 in Japan as part of Mitsubishi Oil. Since then the company has finished projects in over 60 countries worldwide.

One of the bigger projects Chiyoda completed was Saudi Arabia’s first heavy oil cracking facility, the Jubail Export Refinery.

Chiyoda is using BIM technology for project management and to improve the productivity of the project team.

17: GS E&C

GS Engineering and Construction Corporation is a Korea-based global contractor which provides in designing and construction services. The company started in 1969 and has grown into one of the biggest construction companies in the world.

The company has experience with a lot of projects. Few examples are the construction of power plants, refineries, bridges and some architectural masterpieces. A good example of a project where GS E&C used BIM technology was during the construction and renovation of the Seoul Parnas Hotel. By using BIM technology, GS E&C was able to save 140 tons of steel on this project.

18: Odebrecht

In 1944, the young engineer Norberto Odebrecht created a company that became the origin of the Odebrecht Group, nowadays one of the biggest construction companies in the world. The company is active in their home country Brazil and 24 more countries around the world.

Odebrecht was involved in the construction of some of the stadiums designed for the Rio Olympics. They’re also increasingly using BIM technoogy to be able to deliver projects in time and within budget.

19: Obayashi Corporation

Obayashi Corporation started its operations back in 1892. The company has played a role in many high-profile large-scale projects. Examples are the seismic retrofit of the Golden Gate Bridge and the bypass bridge over the Colorado River next to the Hoover Dam.

Since a couple years Obayashi is trying to embark on BIM more and more on their projects. The company gives their staff regular training sessions to become more and more specialists in working with BIM.

20: Larsen & Toubro

Larsen & Toubro, also known as L&T, is an Indian based company with its headquarters in Mumbai. The company was founded by two Danish engineers taking refuge in India during the Second World War. The company now has customers in over 30 countries and multiple offices across the world.
